  • Low High

What really got me riled up was this instruction, which I’ve received a number of times in a number of “Tips for Professional Women” contexts: Practice lowering your voice.  If you want to do public speaking, you have to have a lower voice. This takes work, to change your natural voice, but get it as low as you can. FLAMES.  FLAMES, ON THE SIDE OF MY FACE. So . . . women’s voices are less pleasant than men’s deeper ones, I guess?  To succeed in public speaking, Be As Much Like a Man As You Can?  Maybe we can cut to the chase and just write the speech, then let…

  • What Does One Say?

At our local bar meeting Friday, the first thing we did is said a prayer to Jesus Christ.  We do this at the installation of judges, at Chamber of Commerce meetings, at every city function or lawyer meeting I’ve ever been to. Screw all you Jews and Muslims in this town!  You pray to CHRIST if you wanna live here and keep yer jobs! The second thing we did was say the pledge of allegiance.  Which is,  you know, just fine, except it’s been a while and I felt like a school child. The third thing we did is listen to a speaker who makes predictions – mostly about football,…

  • Rainy July

It’s early morning.  The windows are fogged – we had more rain yesterday.  I think for the bulk of us across the country, this summer shall go down as the Season of Unending Rain.  Except for it ruining the Fourth of July, I haven’t minded much – my inclination, still, is to lounge at all times, and rain keeps me from feeling like I should really be outside.  I think I literally watched five movies on Sunday (some of them kids’ movies, but still).  This gestating body very much likes to chill. The boys are in kind of a wonderful phase right now, both of them.  After I complained about…

  • Memorial Day Weekend – She Loves It, She Loves It Not

My *least* favorite thing about this weekend is the stupid preaching.  Argh with all the preaching.  “This weekend isn’t about grilling burgers with friends, you selfish jerk, so honor your fallen soldier,  you spoiled rotten lazy brat who doesn’t care about The Selfless Troops as much as I do!”  Yeah, because a finger-wagging facebook post once a year is really THE way to remember fallen soldiers. My favorite thing about this holiday weekend is also facebook related – when friends post pictures of their smiling olde tyme family members in uniform.  Now THAT is a memorial I can get behind – love and remembrance, and a little bit of history.…

  • Busy busy busy

I flew home from Tampa on a windy February day, and landed right into a whole mess of work that’s still sort of running my life.  To top it off, Saturday was our lovely town’s 24th annual chili cookoff/cancer fundraiser.  Our law firm sponsors a booth, and I was in charge of clean-up.  I spent the morning working, took a break in the afternoon to haul disgusting chili-grease coated pots and utensils into the back of my Pilot in a biting cold wind, then came home, washed them, and worked some more.  Because I’d been deprived of my darlings’ company during the past week, I was also trying to pay…
