O Solo Mio
I’m a solo parent, on day four of an eleven day jig without the husband. OMG I’m frackin’ tired. I’m potty training Jack, and he’s doing pretty well. In the opposite of most kids I know, he is great at #2 but having a harder time making it for #1. But anyway, approximately a zillion times a day, I take him to the bathroom stand him on the step stool, and he says “Pull down my pants, mama, Pull down my pants.” I pull down his pants, he sits on the potty and sings the ABCs, and sometimes he actually goes in it though usually he does not. Then he says…

Home
Laundry, in piles of darks, lights. The AC competes with the constant warm hum of the dryer. The cat, alone these past three weeks, does figure eights around our legs, meowing indignantly. Liam goes after her, giggling. She meanders away (he is very slow). The boys descend upon the toys they’d left behind. We sort the mess. Socks back in the sock drawer, shampoo back in the shower, toothbrush in the small ceramic cup on the edge of the sink. I take down the Easter decorations, finally. Jack combs my hair with a blue plastic Play-Doh knife, and recites lines from the movies he watched in the car yesterday…

The Five Environments – Stratford-upon-Avon
Ah, Stratford. How I love thee. How I dote on thee! Except thy weather, which was depressing. Thy Tudor homes, thy smoky pubs, thy sweet immersion in Shakespearean history. Ahhhh, to see thy lovely green hills again! OK, enough with the "thys." This house here is Shakespeare’s birthplace, on Henley street. It used to be a lot plainer outside and in, but then it was discovered that those old Elizabethans liked bright colors. In order not to have to change the forty seven million postcards that have The Birthplace picture on them, the historians decided not to change the outside much, but the inside is now a…

The Five Environments
I read a blog post about The Five Environments that I really enjoyed, as much for the pictures as the topic. The blogger reprinted a comment from a commencement speech about the five environments, and determining how they impact your well-being (the five environments, per this dude, are Mountains, Plains, Desert, Beach, and City – I would argeu an incomplete and odd list. But whatever, I can get with the program.) He then examined his own former cities of habitation to see in which environment they fit, and how he felt there, and whether or not there was a pattern. Anyway, it was a neat exercise, and I thought I’d do it here, but more with the purpose of introducing you…

October
Have I mentioned that October is my favorite month? Here’s why. Last weekend I was trotting about the beach in a bikini shooting pictures and frolicking in general. This past weekend I wore sweaters and knee high boots, lit some candles, and watched scary movies while sipping on mulled wine. (A quarter inch in the bottom of the mug, don’t worry.) No other month in the year is this predictably delicious. It makes me want to buy root vegetables, which I did yesterday. Only in October will you catch me buying a rutebega. *It’s for a pot pie. Oh, our weekend was just wonderful, and as such makes for uninteresting reading. Feel…
