What a wonderful weekend. The husband decided that we should take a nice long hike on Saturday, because the weather was beautiful and we haven’t gone hiking in a while. The plan was for said hike to be a "leisurely" 10 miles, and we sort of guessed on the map where we should plan to begin and end to make it 10 miles. We parked a car at one end, then drove another car to, what we figured, was 10 miles or so down the trail. A few guideposts down the trail, we discovered that it was more like 15. Well, 16, to be exact.
We could have turned back and abandoned the plan, but instead we pressed on, deciding to pretend we were pioneers. By mile 13, we were cursing the sky, chewing on bits of bark for sustenance, smacking poor chapped lips, and furiously rubbing our knotted calves. We made it to the end, obviously, else who would be typing this blog? It was quite a day, though. A really fun adventure, despite our sore legs, and afterwards we went to a friend’s party and chowed down on Sloppy Joes and PBR and regaled them with stories of our endless slog through the wilds of central North Carolinian forest. They were quite bored; we were quite pleased with ourselves nonetheless, and of course we fell asleep at an ridiculously early hour for a Saturday.
Sunday I went to see a play while the man graded papers, and then we spent the evening lounging, reading, and drinking boxed wine (well I was lounging and reading – he was still grading). This morning I was still stiff and sore from our marathon (how sad is it that marathon runners RUN longer than we walked!) But the gym today helped me work out some of the kinks, and I feel like a million bucks. I threw a couple of pix out there – some of the beginning of the hike of my uncooperative husband (he was not feeling the camera that day), some of our January trip to the Biltmore, and some of the inspiration for my sonnet – the cat and the husband read the paper together every morning and it is the funniest thing to see. I hope he doesn’t make me take it down! Your flannel pjs look cute, honey pie!
