If anyone notices an ad snuck into any text you see in reader from now on – do let me know. I tried a couple of fixes, and I need to know if they worked!
It’s Sunday again – holy cow, the weeks just spin right out, swirly whirly topsy turvy, and another week gone. I’m not meal planning today, because we have enough leftovers and stuff just around in the fridge and freezer that I think we can clean it out and have enough to sustain us over the course of the week. Should you care to know, the lazy lasagna was awesome but not lazy in the slightest (took forEVER – and I used ground beef instead of lamb because there was no lamb to be found), the corn cakes are the Professor’s favorite, and we all loved the broccoli sausage pasta – shaving fresh pecorino romano over it really drove that dish over the edge. I never made the pork udon because the Professor was sent grocery shopping and could not locate udon – instead I used the pork to make this ridiculous deliciousness, plus mashed some old potatoes and heated up frozen peas. A traditional meat and two, it was pretty tasty.
While making the avocado salsa for those corn cakes, I use a spoon to dig out the avocado pit and it shot past my ear and landed feet away from me on the ground. And gobbledy slurp, before I could blink my eyes, the dog had swallowed it whole. WTH dog. Why did that look appetizing? Luckily it was the smallest avocado pit I have ever seen – maybe just a touch bigger than an Easter time robin’s egg candy, and similarly ovoid shaped. So we’re keeping an eye on him and hoping he’s able to, er, process it properly. This involves kicking around in his daily deposits looking to see if it’s made its way through, which is just as delightful as it sounds. Stupid dog. We googled a list of signs of a dog in distress, and are keeping a close eye on him. I am getting mentally prepared to drop some coin on intestinal surgery if necessary, but I’m hoping it doesn’t come to that for all the reasons you can imagine. So far he is exhibiting no unusual behaviors except peeing on my bathroom rug, and I think that was just him being cranky that we left him all day so we could go to the beach.
We went to said beach yesterday, joining old New Orleans friends for a lovely day of swimming and sunbathing on the bay side of Pensacola beach. I am normally really good about sunscreen, but this particular day I got to chatting and catching up before applying it to myself – and I have the bright red, painful burn on my back to show for it. Erg. Melanoma, age spots, a week of pain followed by a week of peeling skin . . . that was dumb. It was a glorious day though – the boys played with their old buddy Owen, I got to play with his delightful 10 month old sister Anna, and we all chatted and hung out, the sounds of splashing and chattering children the background music to our afternoon.
Today was a day of errands. Shopping – the American pastime. For Father’s Day my lucky husband received from the boys (me) a t.v. to go in our front room – we have a built-in cabinet and even have a blu-ray player and cable box in there, but had not yet purchased the television to go in it. It’s a relatively small cabinet, so it is a modest t.v. and seemed like a reasonable purchase to celebrate my husband’s heroic efforts with the children this summer (a period when he has been the primary caregiver while I basically live at work). I was going to give it to him on Father’s Day, but it was too hard to hide the financial transaction. He’s leaving for about a month in Ireland the day after Father’s Day, and wouldn’t be able to enjoy the new toy if I gave it to him on the right day, so we went ahead and picked it up today. We dropped some dolla billz at Old Navy on little boy clothes, had lunch at Panera, and went home happy and only a touch poorer. The husband spent the rest of the afternoon sitting in the (unfurnished) front room watching baseball – he dragged the old nursing glider in there to sit on, pulled up the piano bench as a side table, grabbed a beer and some peanuts and was in heaven. I was also in heaven as I was spared the multiple hours of baseball, which is a pretty boring sport, so it was kind of a mother’s day present as well.
Speaking of baseball, we have decided to take some friends to a Mobile Bay Bears game around Liam’s birthday, in lieu of an actual party. Firstly, another kid in his class is throwing a huge Super Why party on his actual birthday, and beat me to the punch with invitations. I obviously can’t compete with that – and to be truthful, Jack’s birthday, though relatively low-key, kinda drained me of the birthday mojo, and it has not yet recharged. Liam will go enjoy this Super Why party as much as (or more than) any competing party I could put together, and we will celebrate him separately at a game with some friends in a less traditional kid-party manner, and now I don’t have to come up with any cute ideas. We will ride this train as long as we can, til he’s old enough to care. 😉
Tomorrow is Monday. Once more unto the breach.
Your dog and mine are kindred souls.
I learned how to remove an avocado pit a few years ago, so I’ll pass the advice on to you. Here you go: http://www.thekitchn.com/whats-the-best-way-to-get-the-147890. Happy pitting! 🙂
