- My *least* favorite thing about this weekend is the stupid preaching. Argh with all the preaching. “This weekend isn’t about grilling burgers with friends, you selfish jerk, so honor your fallen soldier, you spoiled rotten lazy brat who doesn’t care about The Selfless Troops as much as I do!” Yeah, because a finger-wagging facebook post once a year is really THE way to remember fallen soldiers.
- My favorite thing about this holiday weekend is also facebook related – when friends post pictures of their smiling olde tyme family members in uniform. Now THAT is a memorial I can get behind – love and remembrance, and a little bit of history.
- My *least* favorite thing about this particular weekend is that I have a ton of work to do.
- My favorite thing about this particular weekend is I am doing it in a comfortable chair, with the window open and the mild, late-spring breeze cooling my toes, and my children playing happily at my feet. (They are also, wonder of wonders, kind of leaving me alone, which makes this easy!)
- My *least* favorite thing about this particular weekend is that I have a trial on Tuesday, and I’m already mildly nervous.
- My favorite thing about this particular weekend is I HAVE A TRIAL ON TUESDAY!! 8 months into my first year, and I’m already second chairing a trial! I wrote a dispositive motion for this file which went very well, and so the partner kept me on the file and has given me a witness to examine and a motion to argue and everything. There are partners who have been working ten years who have still never done a trial, so this is a big deal, and probably will be a window into my arguing more motions, taking depositions, and lots of Big Girl Lawyer Stuff. Which is all the stuff I really love about this – it’s the theatrical aspect of it, right? Performing before the judge and opposing counsel. I feel ready for it all, and I couldn’t be more thankful to this partner for (a) letting me do it so early on, and (b) letting me prep from my comfy chair at home today.
So happy Memorial Day weekend. Enjoy your hard-earned day off – it is a day in remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice, but it is also (for many of us) the first 3 days off in a row we’ve had since January (except not me, of course, because ALWAYS WITH THE WORKING, but whatevs). It’s ok to celebrate resting and family on this weekend, too, and I won’t hold your grill-out against you.
Boo for working all weekend, and generally all the time… but pretty cool that you’re second chairing a trial already!
Yes, very much to the Facebook / Memorial Day stuff. Especially this year, I got a little angry, having lost my friend recently.
