Categorizing Things is Overrated

February 15 – Two

My “Personal Commandments,” Developed Over My Yearlong Happiness Project, 2024

  1. Stressful situations are never not improved by a deep, slow breath.
  2. You almost never regret a group activity, even if it adds to your to-do list.
  3. If you fail to do heart pounding exercise 4 or more days in a row, your happiness and mental health will start to sink fast. It will take you a long time to notice and realize – “oh that’s why I’m so blue.”
  4. There are bad minutes, bad hours, and bad days. There are excellent minutes, excellent hours, excellent days. The goal is to stay steady regardless of which you are in.
  5. Change up whatever you can in your day! There is so much variety in the world, so much to see and do and learn.
  6. You need a lot of quite alone time to recharge. A quiet moment is restorative. Find some every day.
  7. Your family (including extended fam) are your oxygen. Keep them close or you are gasping.
  8. Your passion + bravery mean you speak up for what’s right very often, including truth to power. But your anxiety often makes that speaking up too emotionally charged. It undercuts your effectiveness. Dial down and remove emotion words before you send that email or make that speech. See number 1 above.
  9. You are not in charge of fixing every problem you see. Be choosier.
  10. Carry the world more lightly.
