Spending the morning trying to get motivated. Things to do, but the couch is cushy and blanket is warm and the latest Louise Penny novel is so fun. The children are pawing through the last pile of unsorted Christmas presents next to me. They should be putting them away but they keep getting distracted by them, which is fun to watch. Everyone who sent them things – you chose well! They are having fun!
Last night – a Friday – I took Craig to his first Little League practice of the season. He and his little buds were thrilled to see each other, as if it had been years, although that made them a little rowdy and out of control too. After practice, we swung by the Rivershack Tavern (which was busting at the seams, full of people) and picked up some takeout burgers. I wore an N95 and was the only mask in the place, which is weird in New Orleans (although technically it is in Jefferson Parish, not Orleans, and in J. Par. there has been no pandemic, ever, if you ask them). The burgers were delicious, and I enjoyed a ginger beer (I’ve gone for dry January and have replaced wine and bourbon with tonic water, club soda with Maraschino cherries, and ginger beer.) It was a good Friday night, chilly for NOLA.
This morning, the Prof is smoking a pork butt, and I need to switch the decorations from Christmas to Mardi Gras. I did four lifting sessions last week with my trainer (Tuesday, Thursday, and two on Friday) and I ache down to my bones, so I’m not thrilled about getting up . . . but I’d better. Just a brief check-in, hoping this finds you well as we start our second week of the new year. Below is the week’s menu.
- Smoked pork butt, mustard greens, baked beans
- Salmon, chard and baked carrots
- Rustic potato leek soup
- Black bean and sweet potato flautas
- Fettucine with turkey meatballs
- French onion dumpling soup
- Using leftover pulled pork, make hoisin lettuce wraps (pork tossed with hoisin sauce, matchstick carrots, lettuce slivers, cilantro)
