There are those weekends when I feel that every blessed second was wasted, every opportunity for special family moments missed. This was not one of those weekends! We filled this one up. Saturday I made the meal plan, grocery shopped, made some yellow cupcakes and let the boys decorate them with spider legs and candy eyes that I found in our Halloween decorations bin. Then I cleaned out three closets and all the bathroom drawers, made some food, ran to Target to buy a duvet cover, and then got dolled up and went to a street party. (Friends live on a street that closes off the whole block one night a year, and the homeowners pitch in for a beer truck and a band, and string twinkle lights outside and set out tables and chairs. It’s very nice.)
Today we packed up lunches and snacks and piled the kids in the car for a drive over to Louisiana for work stuff. They spent a lot of time in the car, but we took a detour to a very packed, very hot pumpkin patch. The sun was brutal, and it was very dusty, which is par for the course in October down here. But the boys had a great time, leaping on bales of hay, riding John Deere style trikes in a large penned area, bouncing on a trampoline “pillow”, see-sawing, going down slides, and decorating pumpkins. They all slept on the way home, and I did too. I baked a frozen pizza and they sat, scrubbed up fresh out of the shower, and munched pepperoni slices while watching Halloween cartoons. We polished off a couple of spider cupcakes, and then Jack read the first chapter of “Bunnicula” to Liam and me.
Now they’re asleep, and I’m on my way. Good weekend.
Perfection.
