Domestic Bliss

Interlude

I’ve now been home from Santa Fe almost a week, and memories are already fading.  I took some notes while there, so I’m going to write them up now.  The resulting post may be epic.  Feel free to just skim the pictures.  The writeups are for me to relive the experience – I have re-read our honeymoon posts at least a dozen times over the years, and it’s like taking the vacation all over again.  However, I realize that asking my readers to plow through this is tantamount to collecting you all in a room to view my vacation slideshow – more fun for me than you!

In the meantime, we are back at my parents’ house, living in limbo til the house is done.  I didn’t mention at the time – seemed unwise – but about two weeks before the bar exam, our bank pulled our mortgage funding.  You’ll just have to trust that the reasons were ludicrous.  I spent probably at least twenty hours on the phone that first week, and I’m telling you now that if I failed the bar exam from the diversion and stress of this, Imma sue their tails off.  (I didn’t fail, right?)  At the very least, I plan on writing a VERY STRONGLY WORDED LETTER, because I’m fierce like that.

The story ends happily.  We found another bank, and as of a couple of days ago, got approved.  We did spend far too much of our precious vacation/relaxation time trying to find printers and scanners and checking email again and again.  But we should be set.  I won’t rest easy until closing, though.

So now we’re just waiting for the house to be done.  The boys and I are up with  my parents, and the Professor is down on the Gulf Coast, living in his bachelor pad in New Orleans, working and keeping on top of the house-finishing project.  While dropping the Professor off, we all visited the house the other day – it looks great.  Jack was extremely concerned that it was missing potties, but I’m confident they’ll get around to installing those before they hand us the keys.  I’ll put a picture or two here, but since it’s still a mess and I plan on boring you with a full complement of pictures once it’s complete and we’re in there, I’ll keep it to just a couple.  OK, five.  Maybe six.

Love our big front porch - some day we'll buy a row of dark wood rockers for up there - maybe even a swing!
Boys by the front door. Love the brick, love the door. I mean, I know I picked it, but I still can't get over how much I like the way it all turned out.
That's our front porch ceiling. We have fans and recessed lights on both the front and back porches. We are porch-sittin' people. The raggedy seam between the stained ceiling and the brick will be covered in vinyl.
Here's the bones of our kitchen. Getting there. Granite's being put in as I type. I can't wait to see it with the dark hardwood floors!
Standing behind the island in the kitchen, this is what you face - the den. The fireplace will be stone with a distressed old beam for the mantel.
This is the back porch. You can get to it from the family room and from the study - which has lots of windows and a French door. I'll spend a good deal of time in there, so I'm glad it will be a light-filled room.

They still have to do floors, some of the built-ins in our formal living room and study, the fireplace facades, all of the exterior vinyl, the granite, sinks, and appliances, the light fixtures . . . there’s a lot left.  But it’s pretty much all cosmetic, so I’m hoping it will finish on time.  Ish.  At the very least, before my birthday (September 1).  Before I start work?  (September 5.)  Tomorrow????

Wow, your kitchen looks like it’s going to be gorgeous! I have such a thing for white kitchen cabinets–but afraid to get them for myself cuz of smudgy little toddler fingers and stray crayons and markers!
