Remember last year? When I begged you all for money for my cancer fundraiser?
It’s that time of year again.
If you have a dollar, five dollars, twenty dollars to spare, please click on my link below and donate it to Relay for Life. I love this cancer fundraiser because the money goes almost exclusively to cancer research and support services – very little of it is diverted into administrative costs. It is run by the American Cancer Society, so it’s all on the up and up. Our event is on September 26 – that night, my coworkers and I will be serving virgin margaritas and chips and salsa for a donation, and also selling tons of raffle tickets for whatever we can get donated – we’re looking at gas cards, an HD t.v., perhaps an Ipod. It’s a good time – a real fair atmosphere – and it’s nice to know that every funnel cake, roasted corn-on-the-cob, turkey leg, or BBQ sandwich that you buy is money going straight to cancer research. The event also has games, rides for the kids, live shows, and lots of other things. The most goose-bumpalicious bit, though, is at dusk, when the lights on the football field go dim, and we walk around the field entirely lit by luminaria (candles plonked in a paper bag full of sand). It kills me to know that each bag is memorializing a person taken by cancer, or one currently fighting it. There are thousands of them. I am so lucky that my name isn’t out there. So lucky.
Donate if you can. And someday, when work slows down, I’ll get to writing more regularly again.
