Before I Was A Grownup,  Life in Australia

Stories of Oz – The Girl in Pink

I am telling a story of Australia.  It’s out of sequence, later in the year, and anyway that’s how they come to me now – my thinking about that time isn’t linear, chronological.  I was a waitress in a coffee bar/Italian restaurant on the Manly Beachfront for several months.  Moby’s Play was always on the stereo.  It was warm.  I wrote this on a blanket on the beach on a day off.

There is a girl who comes into the restaurant some evenings.  Small, a few freckles, clear green eyes slightly crossed, with light blond hair and a ready smile or familiar squeeze on the arm, even for me, who she doesn’t know.  She always wears something vibrant pink.  Once a feather in her hair – once a slimming knee length jacket.  She always comes with a guy, a different one each time, but she usually knows everyone else in the restaurant and stops at the other tables to say hello.  She is not gregarious, merely friendly, and I like her from afar.  She talks quickly, with animation, drinking jasmine tea and smoking slim cigarettes, one after another. She dips the smoking end under the table whenever I pass, to keep the smoke from my face, and always thanks me, smiles, winks, waves when she leaves.  She is both exotic, and the girl next door, with her jasmine tea and her winks, her trademark pink accessory.  She is so considerate.  I don’t know this girl, I never will, but I envy her confidence, her simultaneous familiar easy manner and mystery, and her open friendliness.  She fascinates my ordinary brown mind, and my ordinary self longs for such color.
