Gillian’s Top Five
I’m stealing a leaf from Bob’s book (see Bob’s Top Five here) and doing a list. In honor of this lovely, lazy Saturday morning . . .
Gillian’s Top Five Saturday Morning Cartoons
1. Voltron
Ahh, I wanted to be the pink one. She was blond, she wore her hair in braids, but she still whupped butt. No one got in the way of these anime ass-kickers, especially when they banded together and became the big scary robot thing. I forget what they were fighting or where they were supposed to live, but who cares, they were my all time favorite.
2. Thundercats
Thunder thunder thunder thunder catsssss!! All those hot guys with their swept back striped hair, the little Snarf thing, what’s not to love? The theme song still gets my heart pumping in anticipation.
3. Smurfs
I admit that as an adult I find it strange that there was only one girl, but that was probably a marketing thing. It’s sort of upsetting that I can sing the "Na, na, na-na-na-na, na, na-na-na, naaaah" theme song to my sixteen year old sister and she has no idea what it is. Papa smurf and his wisdom and his red cap . . . Smurfette with her long beautiful hair and high heeled shoes in the forest, how very practical . . . Brainy with his glasses . . . Grouchy . . . Vanity (that flower!) . . . Handy Smurf . . . these were essentials in my wholesome upbringing. And of course poor balding Gargamel and his mean spirited kitty Azrael – what would an episode be without these villains?? Aaaah, may the smurfs live happily ever after in their little mushroom houses.
4. My Little Pony
I had all the figurines, and they were arranged into families with names. When the show came on I would pull out my ponies and brush their manes and tails. They had such huge eyes, smooth hair, and that little decal on their rump. In trolling around for memories just now, I found this somewhat disturbing and hilarious quiz – see if you can tell which name belongs to a pony and which belongs to a porn star: QUIZ.
5. Bugs Bunny
Timeless. Needs no explanation – except that I had buck teeth as a kid, and my dad used to say "Nyah, what’s up Doc?" to me all the time. He thought it was funny. I cried tears of joy when I got my braces.

Had too comment on this one for sure! Thundercats? LOVED them. My uncle had this one big Thundercat toy that was a robot made up by all the cats. It was awesome and he never let me play with it. I remember staring at it and wanting to touch it SOOOO bad…Smurfs? I thought Smurfette was the prettiest chick around! And was Vanity gay? Looking back now I think he may have been. I mean the hand mirror would have been enough, but the flower? Come on…even the vainest guys I know don\’t sport flowers in their hair. I almost cried reading about the deer in your last blog. I don\’t know how you didn\’t. I have a soft spot for stuff like that too.

Ah, childhood cartoons! We all remember Saturday mornings of getting up early and trying to not wake up Mom and Dad. Thundercats were on after school though, no? I was always partial to Mr. Roger\’s Neighborhood and 3-2-1 Contact. Do you remember that show? I had quite the collection of My Little Pony! And Strawberry Shortcake! And Cabbage Patch Kids! All that stuff is "back in" now. It makes me feel decrepit. :)I hope you had a fun weekend, Sweets!Amanda

No i don\’t think you\’re disgusting…. it\’s a horrible household chore! I put it off too!I didn\’t watch very many cartoons…. Smurfs, yes! Did watch that one. I thing I was a little too old for My Little Pony, but now it\’s my daughter\’s obsession. That and Care Bears. She went through a Strawberry Shortcake stage for awhile, and she\’s starting to liike Cabbage Patch Kids, too. It\’s all coming back!Have a good one!j.
